Wine Spectator is a lifestyle magazine. Its particularity resides in the fact that it is dedicated solely to wine culture and the universe of oenology.
A brief history of Wine Spectator
In 1976, Bob Morrisey created a publication dedicated to wine in San Diego. It was Wine Spectator. Three years after its creation, the magazine was bought by the publishing company Marvin R. Shanken. That year, the experts blind tasted at least 12 400 wines. In 1981, Wine Spectator presented for the first time its « Restaurant Awards » program. The goal of the program is to award the restaurants that have the best wine lists. In 2008, the magazine was named the best wine magazine by the wealthiest magazine readers.
A regular publication
Wine Spectator publishes about 15 issues a year. Each issue contains articles, news, professional profiles, and entertainment. Each section talks about enology and the universe that surrounds wine. In each issue, readers have at their disposition 400 to 1000 tasting notes. The specialists summarize notes on the tasting and on the general quality of each production.
Support from the most respected critics
Wine Spectator works closely with respected critics such as Kim Marcus, James de Molesworth, Harvey Steiman, Bruce Sanderson and James Laube Hôtel. Like most of the publications on the most remarkable wines, the ranking is based on a scale of 50 to 100 points like that created by Robert Parker, a respected critic in the field.
The other activities of the magazine
Other than the publication and wine competitions, Wine Spectator organizes the «Wine Experience». It is an annual event that includes seminars and wine tastings. In 2009, the number of attendants was more than 1000 people. The meeting is held in New York. The guests can test about 335 wines. The magazine also proposes the ”Wine Spectator Scholarship Foundation”. This is a program that aims to finance the education of students who are following a food and wine education.
